Last week, we finished our series on a man’s leadership making an impact versus just an impression. I have found a story which follows up this important component of spiritual leadership which I want to share this week. It also reminds me of a quote by Howard Hendricks, “There is no smaller package than a man wrapped up in himself.”
At the start of the first Gulf War, a newly appointed colonel was moving into his new office. He was proud of his new rank and all the brass and ribbons on his uniform. As he was unpacking his books and office articles, he noticed that a young private was standing in the door with a tool belt around his waist. Immediately, the newly appointed reached and picked up the phone on his desk and spoke into the receiver, “Good morning General Schwarzkopf, it’s great to speak with you. I would be pleased to do that assignment for you. Yes, I can have it done by Tuesday. Oh, to meet you at the club for dinner tonight would be great.” He then turned to the young private and asked, “Now, private what can I do for you?” The private replied, “Well sir, I am here to connect your telephone.”
In trying to be impressive, the colonel destroyed his credibility, character and integrity which often happen when trying to be impressive compromises the truth and personal character. He probably did make an impact on the young private, but it was not one of character and integrity. Impact and impression are poles apart when it comes to personal character and spiritual leadership. If you have children or grandchildren around, they are watching to see if you are really who you say that you are. We must be wrapped up in Jesus and not ourselves.
