WALK AS JESUS WALKED

By Dean Gage

I John 2:6: “Whoever says he abides in Jesus ought to walk in the same way He walked.”   Our words are very important in our Christian walk and reflect what is in our hearts.  However, I believe our daily walk has an even greater impact on those around us.  I ran across a quote recently that is appropriate to how we live the Christian life: “Preach the Gospel at all times; if necessary, use words.”  This is really telling us that our actions speak louder than words.  We are told in our Scripture today that if we abide in Jesus and claim to be a Christian, then we should walk in the same way He walked.  I really cannot add much more to this interpretation as it is abundantly clear.

What it means to us as a Christian is that our lifestyle, our walk, and our actions should preach by example what it means to be a Christian.  Particularly with our children and those at work who do not know a lot of Scripture this is the most effective and powerful way to show Jesus.  Quoting Scripture is not always the best way and usually comes after walking correctly before them.  Fathers should use the routine of the day and events to show how Jesus would walk and make these times to be examples of Scripture.  As you walk daily, use real-life experiences to share what Jesus would do and what words in the Bible are applicable.  We can easily overwhelm people with beating them over the head with Scripture when the most effective Gospel would be for them to see “God with skin on” and a living example of a life walking like Jesus.  We make things too complicated and should simply walk as close as we can in the same way Jesus walked.
