THE CONSEQUENCES OF SIN

By Dean Gage

II Samuel 12: 7: Nathan then said to David, “You are the man!”  The prophet, Nathan, made this statement to David after sharing with him the story of a rich man who took the only lamb from a poor man for himself.  We know that Nathan was referring to David in taking Bathsheba in adultery and then ordering the death of her husband.  David was livid about what should happen to the man.  Nathan told him what would happen as a result of his sin.  We find David’s response in II Samuel 12: 13: Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.”  God forgave David, but the consequences of his sin followed him to the next several generations of his family. It actually started with the death of the child with Bathsheba as God had told Nathan.

Why did I share this Biblical account?  Listen to the truth in what Adrian Rogers said, “Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay.”  This is an undeniable truth and principle of sin.  How many men have started an affair with an emotional attachment which led to an unintended affair?  It usually results in a broken marriage, children with broken relationships and ongoing conflicts, and personal mental anguish and trauma that cost more than what can be paid.  The same thing can happen in work or business where one sin usually results in more sins to cover it up until it takes a person farther than they want to go, keeps them in turmoil longer than they want to stay and cost them much more than they want to pay.  Look at what is currently happening to Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots after his arrest for solicitation of prostitution.  It is only a matter of time until the video of his crime will be leaked for the whole world to see.  His sin is clearly taking him farther than he wants it to go and the cost has not yet even been determined, as well as his public humiliation.   How can he celebrate the last Super Bowl win due to the consequences of his sin?  Don’t put yourself in that place like David where you will hear the words, “You are the man.”
