Spiritual Leaders Develop Godly Character

By Dean Gage

I Timothy 4:7 “Train yourself to be godly.”  I read that the current presidential debates have become almost a joke and that there is a real lack of true strong leadership being exhibited.  I have not watched these and am so disappointed that our country does not have strong leaders waiting in the wings to step forward.  Howard Hendricks of Dallas Theological Seminary several years ago made this statement, “The greatest crisis in the world today is a crisis of leadership, and the greatest crisis of leadership is a crisis of character and the greatest crisis of character is a spiritual crisis.  I could not agree more as all our crisis issues go directly to the heart of man and his relationship to God through Christ.  To be a good leader requires a man to train himself to be a godly man who will not compromise God’s Word or his own spiritual walk.

How does this apply to you and me?  We are not going to lead a nation and probably do not want to even consider it.  But, we have our lives and our families to consider and our development of Godly character to lead them is just as important, or more important, than leading a nation.  Godly character will be the sum of our values of who we are, not who people think we are.  Our Godly character is what qualifies us to lead and to be an example worth following.  As Paul wrote Timothy, we have the personal responsibility to “train yourself to be godly.”
