I Chronicles 12: 32 “And of the sons of Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what to do.” God’s Word tells us in many passages that we must stay alert and Jesus told his disciples in Matthew 26: 41 to keep on watching and praying that they may not fall into temptation. Our verse this week describes some of David’s mighty men which should serve as an example to us in the world in which we live today. We must carefully evaluate our culture and understand the times and culture. When we do, we will realize that our leadership responsibility in the home is more important than ever. Those whom we lead are looking to us on how to live the Christian life with courage and discernment. This is also what God is commanding us to do as we discern how values are changing in our world.
The second part of our verse is that David’s men of Issachar had direction to know what to do. This direction was based on their discernment of the battles they faced. Our discernment should give us a clear direction that is accurate and on target. However, it is not enough to have discernment and direction and then not to lead. You can get in a car, discern its power, know the direction to go but get nowhere unless you start the engine and press the accelerator. Remember: Leadership is an active process and your family is riding in your vehicle with you.
