We continue to look at the number one principle of leadership which is to lead by example as exemplified in the life of Jesus Himself. It is a given that we take on the characteristics, habits and traits of our parental upbringing and those to whom we answer. At work, we try to pattern after the leader’s example and to conform and please. In both settings, we usually take on the same core values. Children are mirrors of what they see and hear in the home. It has been said that children are “God’s little spies.”
Every man must realize the impact of his spiritual leadership and his actions on those whom God has given him to lead. The most important wedding gift that parents can give their children is the gift and example of their own Godly home and marriage. Just as Jesus led by example, a man must lead by example in every area of his life, but first in his own life and home.
If there is a single commandment for spiritual leadership, it is this, “You shall conduct yourself in such a manner as to set an example worthy of imitation by your spouse, your children and those whom God has placed under your leadership.” In other words, if they shouldn’t be doing it, neither should you as the leader. You set the example. Your life and the way you live it will by your most powerful message. It must reinforce and be consistent with what you say. Walking the talk by example matters the most. Again, the key verse is I Corinthians 11:1 “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”
