Leaders Watch and Pray

By Dean Gage

Matthew 26: 41 “Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation.  The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”   This direct statement from Jesus is in the present tense which really says, “Keep on watching and praying.”  Jesus made this statement to his disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane after asking them to pray only to find them sleeping after He had gone ahead to pray.  A spiritual leader must never go to sleep on the job anywhere in life.  He must always be watching and praying for what might come next and not fall asleep on the job.  He must be watchful for the enemy and daily attacks on his leadership and those whom he leads.  He is to never to let his guard down and is to protect, provide and guide.  Look at what Jesus said in Matthew 26: 40 to his disciples when he found them sleeping, “So, could you not watch with me one hour?”

If you know that a battle or attack is coming, you will be carefully watching, on the alert and praying for God’s wisdom, guidance and provision to win and not be defeated.  This is the life and leadership requirement for a spiritual leader today who is in this kind of battle.  If the enemy can take down the leader, he can get to those whom he is leading.  This applies to every man at home and at work.  If he is obedient to watch and pray, he will protect those whom he leads and they will learn how to watch and pray themselves.  This means that preemptive prayer and planning become the way of life.  The result is that we become a prudent man and leader who lives by Proverbs 22: 3  “A prudent man sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.”  One question, “Do you carefully and continually watch and pray every day?”  Remember that the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak, so why take a chance?
