Isaiah 30: 21 And your ears will hear a word behind you, “This is the way, walk in it.” When we accept Jesus as Savior and Lord, our lives are much like boarding an airplane and taking off on a long high altitude flight until we land at our destination. A number of years ago, there was a popular bumper sticker and quote that read, “God is my co-pilot.” I observed this on many cars and it prompted a lot of thoughts in my mind. While this clever little quote may have been meant for good, it is not theologically correct. In fact, too many people try to live this way and tell the pilot how to fly. Our God is not our co-pilot on this flight in life. He must be our Pilot who is in charge of the flight for us to safely reach our destination. We must trust His ability to pilot our lives through the many storms, turbulence and traffic along the way. He is the expert pilot to show us the way to walk up and down the aisles of the plane. He will tell us when to fasten the seatbelt, when it is safe to walk around and when we have reached our destination. He has the latest GPS and technology, flight manual and resources to make our flight safe and successful. He will communicate with us along the entire flight and our ears will hear His voice telling us to follow the way of His preflight plan filed specifically for us to follow.
If God is the pilot, we must be the co-pilot who yields to the pilot. On a real airplane flight in our world today, the only time that a co-pilot is to take command is when the pilot becomes incapacitated. Our God is eternal and will never become incapacitated, so we must be an obedient co-pilot on this journey and never take over the flight controls. Years ago, I sat co-pilot on a small commuter airplane from College Station to Dallas. I knew where we were going, but I did not know how to safely fly the plane to get there. As I sat in the co-pilot’s seat, I thought what would happen if the pilot had a heart attack and died in the pilot’s seat? He was an older man who smoked and was overweight, so my thoughts were not unfounded. I prayed for his health the whole flight. With God as our pilot, we will never have to worry about this as we fly through life under His total control. These are the words that we will hear over the plane’s speakers from our Pilot, “And your ears will hear a word behind you, this is the way, walk in it.”
