Colossians 3:2 “Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.” This Leadership Challenge is a different and personal confession. I watched every play of the UCLA vs. Texas A&M football game last night and felt the devastation of the embarrassing defeat for TAMU. However, that is not my point this morning. I am very upset with myself for not sleeping well after the game as I played the defeat over and over in my mind. The defeat was frustrating and disappointing for all Aggie fans and is hard to explain. However, that game was not eternal and was totally concentrated on things that are on the earth.
When I woke up this morning, my mind went to our verse this week. It challenged me to rethink the priority of football versus the eternal. I allowed this thing on earth to occupy my mind and I had a hard time getting it in the right priority. Leaders are to set their minds on things above, not on the things that are on the earth. This doesn’t mean that we are not to enjoy football. It does mean that we are not to lose sleep and spiritual focus on something that is not eternal and a leader is to keep things in proper perspective. We are to concentrate and think on the eternal rather than the earthly or temporal. This principle is in the present tense and continuous action. Leaders are to continually think and make decisions based on the eternal perspective.
