Leaders Read and Follow the Instructions

By Dean Gage

Psalm 139: 13-14: “For you (God) formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.  I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”   Almost everything that I have bought and owned comes with an instruction manual:  cars, tractor, mower, home appliances, television, DVD player, camera, computer, cell phone and you can name the rest.  Before I use each one, I am reminded to read the instruction manual to see what safety precautions need to be done, how to turn it on, what the specifications are, what maintenance needs to be done and how to correct problems.  Not long ago, I bought a new digital camera and I have had to read the instruction manual over and over to make it function properly.  Every time I change the clock settings in my cars, I have to read and follow the instruction manual and each car is different.  My wife and I recently assembled a new deer blind and it would have been almost impossible to put it together without the instruction manual.  And, how many times at Christmas have you bought something for your children that requires a manual (and sometimes a degree from MIT) to put it together.

We did not make ourselves, so we cannot know how to live or our purpose in life unless we go the Maker and his instruction manual.  We must begin with our Creator God and to understand our origin, our purpose and our destiny.  The beauty of the Christian life is that we have God’s instruction manual in His Word to us.  All other manuals are written for others, not us.  Ours is as specific as our Scripture this week.  It tells us who made us, how to maintain and lead life, how to make corrections and how to live out God’s purpose for our lives.  The answer to every issue we face is found in God’s instruction manual.  As a leader, we must read God’s manual over and over and follow the inerrant instructions to lead our lives and families.  It is the instruction manual for life, marriage and parenting.  I do not have to read every page of the instruction manual for my camera because I have memorized and put in use many of the instructions.  These instructions have become a part of my mind and memory.  When we read and follow God’s instructions, they become a part of us and provide the leadership skills and life application for us to function properly.  Remember that “you are fearfully and wonderfully made.”  Read and follow His Instructions!
