I Thessalonians 5: 17 “Pray without ceasing.” You probably do not know the name of George McCluskey and have never read about him. He was a man who decided to make a difference in his future family. He made the decision early in his marriage to invest one hour a day in prayer for his children to follow Christ. As time went by, he expanded his prayer to include his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He reserved an hour each day to pray for these three generations. His two daughters committed their lives to Christ and married men who became full-time ministers. These two couples had four girls and one boy. All four of the girls married ministers and the boy became a minister. The first two children of this generation were boys and cousins who selected the same university and became roommates. In their second year, one of the boys decided to go into ministry. The other boy knew the family history and must have felt pressure to keep the family legacy going. However, he chose a different path. He knew that he would be looked at being the first one in four generations to not go into full-time Christian ministry.
This young man followed his passion and interest in psychology and became very successful over the years. After he earned his PhD, he wrote a book to parents on how to raise Christian children. He wrote subsequent books on the Christian home and parenting and even began a radio program heard around the world. His name is James Dobson who has been the single most impactful and significant leader of the Christian home and family movement in our nation. I believe he has been a full-time minister who has spiritually impacted the Christian leadership in homes throughout the world. He would tell you that his ministry is the result of the prayers who lived four generations ago. Some of George McCluskey’s great grandchildren never knew him personally, but they knew who he was in their family. What about you? Are you willing to take the time each day to pray without ceasing for your family, children and children yet to be born? Your grandchildren and great grandchildren may never know you personally, but they should know who you were in their family history. I can think of no greater legacy to leave and, in fact, there is no greater legacy to leave them than your Christian walk, prayers and impact.
