Mark 6: 30-32 “The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. And he said to them, ‘Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.’ For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure to eat. And they went away in a boat to a desolate place by themselves.” The greatest leader of all time, Jesus, even knew that rest was very important for a leader. Many times, in Scripture, we read about Jesus taking time to be away to rest and pray. If Jesus is our example and role model and even he rested, then we should follow his example. In our Scripture this week, we find that his disciples were exhausted and did not even have time to eat. What did Jesus do? He told them to find a quiet place and rest. The disciples followed his counsel.
A few years ago, LifeWay conducted a national survey to determine the ten greatest threats on the family today. It was surprising to find that number three on the list was busyness in the family homes and lives. It was only behind our anti-Christian culture and divorce. As I observe families today, I agree with this finding and its damage being to homes today. We can get so busy that we busy God right out of our homes and families. The leader of the home is under enormous stress today to provide for his family with work schedules, but he must protect his family and rest time himself. There is nothing wrong with staying home and resting in the presence of your family. Work can also go on without you for a vacation. I had many leadership roles where personal and family vacations were difficult to make happen. But, it must be a priority that you will not compromise. For the past 25 years, my wife and I have taken a vacation to get away to the quiet and cool mountains of Colorado to refresh, rest and recharge our batteries. We are really like a battery that must be recharged or it will run dry. Only you can make it happen. Jesus did and the demands on his time and schedule were greater than ours.
