Leaders Must Be The Anchor

By Dean Gage

Deuteronomy 6:1-2 “Now this is the commandment, the statutes and rules, that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over to possess it, that you may fear (reverence) the Lord your God, you and your son and your grandson, by  keeping all his statutes and commandments.”  We all know that a boat or ship must have a strong anchor to keep it from floating into danger and risking the lives of those on board.  Our lives are no different and we are to anchor our lives in Jesus Christ and God’s Word to keep us from drifting into foul waters.  As the spiritual leader of your family, you are to be the anchor for generations to come.  Your great grandchildren may never have the opportunity to meet you, but they should know who you were by how you spiritually anchored your family.

As I look back on my own family, my dad was the spiritual leader and anchor who made the difference to anchor our family in Christ.  His parents were not Christians but my dad led them to accept Jesus.  He put down the anchor for our family that has now extended to the third generation (considered to be over 100 years).  My brother and I became the next links and anchors in our family chain and all our children have become Christians.  Now, all my grandchildren are Christians, so the anchor of my father in Christ has extended to his great grandchildren and hopefully beyond.

We see so many families today that pass bad things from one generation to the next and confirm that children most often follow the example and life of their parents.  Divorce, drug and alcohol addiction, abuse and many other vices are passed to the next generations.  Only Jesus Christ can break that cycle.  It takes only one person to break that cycle and become the anchor in Christ.  I do not believe that we often recognize and realize how important our spiritual leadership and lifestyle impact those whom God has given us to lead and those who will follow.  We only get one chance at it.  The command is simple and imperative:  “You be Christ’s anchor in your family today and tomorrow.”
