LEADERS MAKE THE MOST OF TIME

By Dean Gage

Ephesians 5:15 “Therefore, be careful how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise, making the most of your time.”  As long as we are alive, time is something that all of us have in common.   We all have the same amount of it with 168 hours per week.  So, what are we to do with it?  We have three choices:  spend it, waste it or invest it.  What percentage of each do you choose?  The best and wisest use is to spend and invest it in something that will outlast you and impact those whom you lead.  Our time management is a part of our leadership and faithfulness as a good steward of what God has given us.  Spend time with the Lord and your family every day.  If you have to travel and be away from your family, be sure to call them and talk with them every day.  Spending this time is also making an investment in their lives and tells them how much you love them.

What about wasting time?  Many people today waste so much time doing things that have no eternal or even personal value.  Are you wasting more time than you are investing time?  According to many studies today, the biggest waste of time is spending an excess amount of it on smart phones, iPads, videogames, social media and other electronic avenues.  It takes away personal communications and sharing times with the people around you and from time in God’s Word and prayer.  These even take away time from physical exercise needed to keep the body healthy that God gave us to live in. Another waste of time involves the excessive time many people spend in entertainment of television, movies and sports.  What priority do you give them in your daily life?  I recall a number of times I wasted hours watching a televised sporting even just to see my team lose.  I then wasted time thinking about it and became angry with myself for wasting so much time and often losing sleep over it.  There was nothing eternal about it and a few months later, I could not even remember the score anyway.  Live as a wise man and make the most of your time-you only have a certain amount of it left.  I would say that Jesus made the most of His time on the earth and did not waste a single second of it.
