Leaders Keep Their Word

By Dean Gage

Proverbs 30:5 “Every word of God proves true.”  God’s Word to us is His bond and always proves true.  Our personal word to others must be our bond and prove to be true.  This applies to our every walk in life: personal, family, work, church and community.  Keeping our word proves our integrity and true spiritual leadership.  If you give your word that you are going to do something, then you must do it or have a legitimate reason of explanation.  This is so true in your leadership at work where others are watching to see if you are a leader and man of your word.  It is also true in your family and to your wife and children.

Illustration:  A young father had always been too busy to go on scout camping trips with his 8 year old son.  The annual trip to the mountains came up again and the father promised his son that he would go with him this time.  He told his son that he would meet him in the school parking lot at 3:00 p.m. and leave with all the other fathers and sons.  The father did not arrive by 3:30 p.m. or even 4:30 p.m., so the little boy had to walk home by himself.  The father came home about 8:00 p.m. and apologized that he had gotten so busy at work that he couldn’t get free to go.  He told the little boy that he had the map of where the scout group had gone and that they would leave the next morning at 6:30 a.m. to join the group.  The little boy was excited and was waiting on the front porch with all the camping gear at 6:00 a.m. ready to load and go.  The father never came out of the house until 9:00 a.m. and was holding his back area as if in pain.  He told the young boy that his back bothered him all night long, he did not sleep well and just couldn’t go again.  He also said that he had some obligations he had to meet and would need a “rain check.”  The little boy was crushed and started to take the camping gear back into the house.  He then saw his father go out the back door with his golf clubs slung over his shoulder.  He opened the trunk of his car, placed the golf clubs in it and drove off to meet his other obligations.  He did not keep his word even to his own son.  May this story or one similar never be true in our lives.
