Leaders Don’t Suffer FOMO: Matthew 6:33 “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” I recently read a devotional about FOMO which described another acronym that millennials use today. It is a phrase to describe “Fear Of Missing Out.” In many respects, it is like having a bad case of the flu or some other disease. It can be a debilitating fear for some people of being left out of a social event or social media or extracurricular activities. An acute or chronic case of FOMO sounds bad and can be bad when priorities are not in order. It can result in strained relationships, conflicts, and self-pity. When it is outside our relationship to Christ, it is a sinful attitude and behavior that is not Scriptural as in our verse this week.
A case of FOMO is a phenomenon that is not limited to young people or millennials but to adults as well. It is not something that we want to model before those we lead. There is no way that activities or recognition by man can satisfy the longings in our heart. Jesus is the only answer and vaccination against a case of FOMO. The real bottom line is that we do not want to be caught with FOMO in our relationship to Christ. We don’t have to suffer from FOMO when we accept Jesus and place our priority on seeking him first. We won’t be missing out on the eternal and spiritual things in life here, now and forever.
