Philippians 3:1 “To write the same things again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard for you.” At the beginning of each year, most people think about making so-called “New Year’s Resolutions.” These often relate to health, weight, exercise and time commitments and are usually reminders of what we already know. These are beneficial to the man who makes them only if he keeps them. What about making and keeping some spiritual resolutions that impact your family and your personal life? Paul in our Scripture today addresses this important principle where he clearly states that we are to be reminded of spiritual principles and life application again and again. He further states that we are to do this as a safeguard for our lives.
Now is the time to evaluate your spiritual walk and leadership and how they are impacting your family and your life. Once you have taken this inventory, you must then make some important decisions to see if changes and resolutions are needed. They will become safeguards only if they are kept. It may mean that you will need to be a more effective example of Christ to your family. It may mean that you simply spend more family time with those you love and lead. Or, it may mean that you need to commit to personal spiritual growth and maturity by being obedient to God’s leadership. This is clearly promised in Psalm 32: 8 “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you.” The bottom line as you begin the new year is to ask God and yourself what you need to commit to doing (resolution) to be the spiritual leader in 2016 that God wants you to be.
