LEADERS ARE REAL MEN

By Dean Gage

John 2: 15  “Jesus made a whip from ropes and chased the merchants and money changers out of the Temple.”  You have heard the term recognizing a leader or man as, “he’s a man’s man.”   Our role model for being a real man is Jesus Christ.  We recognize that he was a man of humility, forgiveness, kindness, gentleness and serving others.  But, Jesus was also a man of strength and courage who was never afraid to confront and take action against what was wrong and contrary to God’s Word.  When we look at leaders in both the Old and New Testaments, we see men who stood tall with strength and courage from the character of God in their lives to confront and take action to do what was right.  From Abraham, Moses, Joshua, Nehemiah, David, Daniel to the disciples, Paul and Jesus, we see men take God at His Word and commandment to be strong and courageous while at the same time exhibiting the character traits that we find in Jesus Christ Himself.  We are to lead and confront issues just as Jesus did to the merchants misusing the house of God.  He is our example to follow.

So, how do you and I apply this Scripture and commandment to lead?  It applies to every area of our lives.  First, we must confront ourselves to live a life in Christ with the same character traits He showed.  We must lead our families with kindness, care, love, forgiveness and unselfishness, but always ready and willing to take action and make decisions to confront the enemies who try to misuse our own homes.  View your home like the temple in our Scripture this week as it should be God’s house.  It is no different in our leadership responsibilities at work and with our co-workers.  They need to see Jesus in us and see us stand for what is right.  “People do what they see people do.”  If people at work see you standing up and doing what is right, they will know that this is what you expect of them.  This same life and leadership also applies to us at church and in the community in which we live.  Much of our nation’s issues today are directly related to this lack of men being real men in these five areas.  Our national crisis has been called a character crisis, but a character crisis starts with a spiritual crisis.  A real man will act to drive out the “merchants and money changers” from his own life, family, work, church and community.  Remember this:  “The easiest way to mishandle an issue is to ignore facing up to it.”  Jesus did not ignore the merchants and money changers in the temple. No, He confronted them and took strong and courageous action.  Be like Jesus and throw them out!
