Leaders Are Communicators

By Dean Gage

I Corinthians 2: 1 “And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom.”   Leaders have many responsibilities and traits but none can be achieved without clear communication.  Leadership doesn’t become leadership until communication has occurred.  A good leader does not have to be either an extrovert or an introvert.  The leader simply must have a message to carry to those whom he leads.  If a leader has to search for a message, his leadership will not be effective.  In one sense, a leader is a salesman who has a superior product (message) that will make the buyer a better person.  Paul was not an eloquent speaker as confirmed several times in his letters.  But, he had the message of the gospel and shared this message from his heart and his experience.  Yes, he had to speak to many different people and groups and his written communication in the form of his letters is still communicating to us today.

What about you and me?  We must carry the testimony of God in our lives with honest, sincere and humble communication that speaks to those we lead.  It must be from the heart and in the best interest of others as it flows from God Who lives in us.  It takes time to develop your message and it should be lived out in your example, as well as your words.  You have heard that we are to “walk the talk.”  It is powerful and must be delivered with clarity and consistency.  Those whom you lead and especially your children and grandchildren are both listening and watching.  With them, your message will need to be communicated over and over but perhaps in different ways and settings.  When a true leader speaks, we will already know what he is going to say.
