Good Leaders Are Humble

By Dean Gage

James 4:10 “Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.”   In Scripture, one of the most common traits of God’s best leaders is the personal trait and attitude of humility.  Jesus is the most perfect example of a humble leader who humbled himself even to death on the cross for us.  And, then look at how God exalted Him above every name.  Leaders must place the care and needs of those he leads above his own personal desires.  The more people a man leads, the greater will be his unselfish leadership for them to succeed.  Scripture has many passages above being humble before both the Lord and man and promises that God will exalt you.  Being humble does not mean to not be strong and courageous.  It means to look at how placing God first translates to servant and unselfish leadership.

To humble ourselves in the presence of the Lord means to not allow spiritual pride and a selfish attitude to drive the way we live and lead.  Spiritual pride can come from a man thinking he has the only spiritual insight and interpretation of Scripture, rather than listening to others with a teachable spirit.  A teachable spirit of humility is what a father leading his children wants to model and to see in them.  The same applies at work and church.  Humility is the opposite of pride and is a fundamental attitude of the heart for developing and maintaining an intimate walk with God and a vibrant prayer life.  It creates for the leader an environment of trust, openness, care, communication and unselfishness which make leadership a respected and exalted position and example to follow.
