FATHERS MUST LIVE WHAT THEY TEACH

By Dean Gage

Deuteronomy 6: 1 “Now, this is the commandment – the statutes and the rule – that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going.”    Verses 6: 6-7 “And these words that I command you this day shall be on your heart.  You shall teach diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and whey you lie down, and when you rise.”  One of the most important leadership responsibilities of a father is to teach God’s Word to his children.  Scriptures command it and we find in Ephesians 6: 4 that a father is to bring up his children in the instruction of the Lord, which clearly means God’s Word.  At the same time and just as important or more so, the father is to live God’s Word (do them) before his children.  He is to demonstrate in his life that God’s Word is his compass and guiding manual.

We are told to do God’s Word in verse 1 above and verses 6-7 tells us that we are to teach in daily life as we walk through each day.  I have found that real world examples and life experiences are more effective than formal and rigid family devotions.  We must live out God’s Word in everything and everywhere we go in life.  One of a father’s leadership goals for his children must to transfer Christ from his life to their lives.  I read a great quote last week, which I believe to be so true, “Christianity is caught more than it is taught.”  You are to teach by what you personally do in life yourself.  If there are things that you do not want your children to do, then you should not be doing them yourself.  If there are things that you want your children to do, then they should see you doing them.  Do they see you in God’s Word, in prayer and in church?  Yes, children are “God’s little spies,” so be careful how you live out God’s Word in front of them.
