Discernment & Direction

By Dean Gage

As we continue to look at vision in spiritual leadership, we need to know that it also involves the present from the aspect of discernment and direction. I Chronicles 12: 32 describes King David’s mighty men or warriors of Issachar and states that they were “men who understood their times and knew what they should do.” In real terms, this means that a man must have pro-vision leadership to look ahead and make decisions on what he sees in the world around him and How the Holy Spirit and the Word guide him to act. Dan McCreary in Walk the Talk stated, “Managers think about today. Leaders think about tomorrow.” This means to watch out, look ahead, chart the course, have a plan and set the destination.

As we looked at last week, Jesus set His destination at the age of twelve, knowing that it was the cross. As a spiritual leader, a man is like a scout riding ahead of the covered wagon filled with his family – those whom God has given him to lead. It is a husband’s and father’s leadership responsibility to look into the future and see his family, not as it is today, but as it should be. Vision and goals go hand in hand in leadership. Without them, it would be like going bowling and as you start down the lane, you notice there are no pins to knock down. Men who do not lead, have no pins to knock down and the score reflects the void.
