Psalm 27:23 “Know well the condition of your flocks, and pay attention to your herds.” Yes, I know that this verse applies to livestock, but its principle also applies to a man and his family. We could just translate it to be: “Know well the condition of your family, and pay attention to your children.” In real estate, the term is always location, location, location. For a man and his family, it is communicate, communicate, communicate. How else will you know the condition of your family and pay attention to your children.
I am not talking about today’s high tech communication of cell phone calls and texts and emails. I am referring to genuine personal communication of listening and talking. By nature, men are known as bad listeners and it takes real work, patience and love to stop and pay attention. Eye contact and being still go a long way in making your family feel important and that you are interested in them. It tells them that you care and that they are important to you. I grew up in a home of all boys except for my mother. God gave my wife and me all girls and did I have a lot to learn. Many times, my girls wanted me to give them an ear more than words from my mouth or even a solution. Don’t forget that your facial expression and body language also send communication signals.
If we do not properly communicate, we will never fully know their condition or what is going on in their lives. Communication times are times of teaching important spiritual and life lessons. You are the one responsible for leading them in whatever conditions they face. If communications are not kept open, your children will not bring their issues to you or feel that you do not care. So, the bottom line is to communicate, communicate, communicate. It is hard work but it is worth it and the dividends are significant.
