Attitude

By Dean Gage

Over the past few weeks, we have looked at integrity and courage as they are vital character traits of spiritual leadership. We now turn our attention to attitude. It is a character trait because it determines our behavior, opinions and actions toward people, circumstances, situations and even God, Himself. Philippians 2:5 “Have this attitude in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” Attitude is our manner of showing our feelings, thoughts and disposition toward people and daily life. It is what others see and hear in us. It is what our lives are saying to them. Denis Waitley in Walk the Talk said, “First, we make our attitudes. Then, our attitudes make us.” This is why the Apostle Paul wrote that we are to have the attitude or mind of Christ in our lives and homes. Attitude gives direction and sets an environment for our spiritual leadership and homes. This is vividly described as an example for us in Joshua 24:15 “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” This verse from Joshua is plural and not singular. Joshua first started with himself (me) and then his family (my house). Since team spirit starts at the top, is this the attitude that you are setting in the house you lead?
