A number of years ago, television basketball analyst and former NBA player, Charles Barkley, made the statement that he did not want to be viewed as a role model. His statement is totally false because every one of us is a role model of some type, whether we like it or not. The real question is what type of role model we are.
Titus 2:7-8 “In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about you.”
This advice is as relevant today as it was when the Apostle Paul wrote it to Titus. Many men today who have the responsibility of leading a family or business were reared in families where fathers neglected their responsibilities to lead their wives and children. They had no role model to follow. Husbands and fathers who are good Christian examples are critical role models for their families to see how it is done. People do what they see people do and a man must never take lightly how he lives the Christian life before those around him at home or work. If you want someone to act a certain way, be sure that you live that same way yourself. If they shouldn’t be doing something, then neither should you. You will then earn the right to be heard and your life will reinforce what you teach. Do you live and lead in such a way that those who oppose you would be ashamed to say anything bad about you? It comes down to the issue of character and integrity which for a Christian man is living out the character of Christ every day. This is the true definition of a role model leader.
