A Leader with Passion

By Dean Gage

Colossians 1: 18 “And He (Jesus) is the head of the body, the church.  He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything He might be preeminent.”  Every strong leader has a passion for something in his life that drives him forward to lead his own life and those whom God has given him to lead.  What is your driving force?  What are you passionate about?  What keeps you moving when the going gets tough?  What is really first in your life that others see?  Our verse this week is what the Christian life and spiritual leadership is all about – whom or what is first in your life?  The answer is reflected in your decisions, your character, your relationships, your work, your family and your leadership.

We know by now that we are to model and be an example of Christ to those we lead.  Are we an example of a life that places Christ first in everything?  That is what our verse says to us.  This is how others are to see Christ in us.  Do people at work see this in your life?  Is this what your wife and children see at home?  Our verse does not say in some things, but in everything or in all things.  We do not live a life of going through a buffet line to pick and choose only certain items where we place Jesus first and walk past those we don’t want.  He wants and has earned the right to be first in all things.  Does your family or those at work see you place Christ first at church but not in your leisure or hobby time or business life?

Your passion should not only reflect this verse but should drive you to a passion of leading in such a way that the whole attitude and environment of your home should be:  “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”  You should not have to write this out and place it on the refrigerator or above the fireplace.  Rather, it should be written on your heart and those whom God has given you the responsibility to lead.  How are you doing?  Are you a leader with a passion for Jesus and a leader after God’s own heart?
