A LEADER AND HIS DECISIONS

By Dean Gage

A LEADER AND HIS DECISIONS: Joshua 24:15 “Choose this day whom you will serve…... But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”  I recently read that we make an average of some 30,000 decisions every day.  That is a staggering number and I had to think about it before I could accept and realize it.  Most of these decisions are minor and encompass simple daily living, such as what time do I get up, do I eat breakfast, if so, what do I eat, what do I wear today, what do I pray today, what Bible verses do I read, do I exercise this morning, do I go to work today, who do I text or call?  The list can go on and on and at the end of the day may well reach thousands.  But there are major decisions we also have to make with some having eternal consequences such as those involving marriage, home, children, work and serving the Lord.  Of course, accepting Jesus is the most important one-time decision and you will ever make.   Once that decision is made, then the question is, “Whom will I live for and serve each day?”  Will it be for the Lord or self?  Will I serve the Lord when others around me don’t?  If they don’t, that is their problem but don’t let it be a problem in your life.

One of the greatest leaders in the Bible was Joshua who led God’s people into the Promised Land.  He then saw them begin to serve other gods than the God who had given them what He promised.  Like our personal decisions each day, Joshua told the people to choose this day whom you will serve.  He then told them his answer to the question, “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”  While his statement is plural (me and my house), he knew that it started with him and that he was the one to courageously take a stand.  Others could do what they wanted, but he chose the Lord.  It was leadership by example and the model of life he chose for himself and his family.  It is no different today.  We cannot neglect or abdicate our leadership decision to serve the Lord.  It is a decision that we make every day and should be the basis and filter for all our other decisions.  Do those who live in your home or those with whom you work see your decision to serve the Lord as part of your life and leadership?  If not, then you have a decision to make.
